Amid
a constantly changing school environment, with
the budget cuts and the staff turnover, one
thing has remained consistent over the years
and that is the thriving athletic programs at
Belmonte Middle School.
Starting in the fall, as students
return to school, they can participate in either
field hockey or cross-country. The field hockey
program, started by Belmonte's own gym teacher
Barbara Guarante (as well as being the Varsity
Field Hockey coach at Saugus High School), has
been very successful and houses up to 70 team
members each year, which as resulted in many
of them moving on to play for Coach Guarante
at the high school.
For the past eleven years, Chris
Tarantino, a former Belmonte faculty member
who currently works with the school as an employee
for the Youth and Recreation Department, has
annually had forty combined athletes working
hard challenging themselves in sports, driven
by setting goals. Competing in the 11 team North
Eastern Conference, while calling Breakheart
Reservation "home," Belmonte has realized
many goals and has had plenty of success. Most
recently in 2006, Saugus' Dan Drescher established
himself as the best middle school distance runner
of all time in the N. E. C. as he broke the
conference meet course record, his time of 8:53
still stands.
When the fall gives way to the
winter months, basketball is next on the tap.
Both boys' and girls' teams usually carry up
to 15 players on a team. However, that is no
indication of the popularity of hoops at Belmonte;
where there is typically 80 kids combined trying
out for these teams in hopes of representing
their school. These numbers have prompted a
basketball program prior to the season that
is currently being offered to engage more kids
in the sport.
Spring is next up and Coach Tarantino is back
at it as he leads the enormously successful
track teams, largely to do with their upwards
of 120 team members a year. Belmonte has enjoyed
unparalleled results, and doing so without a
home facility has been no small feat, but with
the recent construction of the track at Belmonte,
student athletes are anticipating hosting a
meet for the upcoming 2009 season, having the
good fortune of having a league meet to compete
in much like a varsity program. Both boys' and
girls' teams have finished first on many occasions
and have had near countless amounts of individual
league champs. Add in the ever growing golf
team and talks of a baseball team, and the spring
is a hot bed of activity.
Additionally, through the Youth and Recreation
Department, Belmonte has a year-round after
school program that allows ample opportunity
for participants to partake in athletics.
