Recently, eighth
grade Belmonte Middle School students and
ninth grade Saugus High School students
took a College Campus Trip to Stonehill
College. Eighth grade guidance counselor
Mrs Lueke coordinated the trip with high
school counselor Bethany Larsen. Together
we addressed the Career and College Readiness
Goals of our 8th and 9th grade guidance
departments. It is not too early to start
looking at a post high school plan. Students
were selected by teachers and the enthusiasm
by all students and staff was great. Students
enjoyed a question and answer period, a
video about the college, lunch in the dining
commons, and a tour of the campus.
Mrs. Lueke, along with high school counselors
have been working on Career Planning with
the Naviance Program and this went along
nicely as we talked about different majors
to select in college that connect to different
careers. Overall it was a great experience
and already students are talking about what
colleges they would like to attend. In the
guidance room at the middle school teachers
have donated different flags of their own
colleges.
A Career Cafe has been implemented at the
middle school where different Career Speakers
come and talk to the middle school students.
All of this gives meaning to many of the
subject areas. We talk about crossing skills
and discussing all different kinds of strengths
and weaknesses that can be considered in
our career selections. Students have become
excited about their learning and a new level
of motivation has set in among middle school
students.
