| The 'Spring Season Registration/Information
Night' will be March 1st at 6:00 at Saugus
High School. The mandatory portion of the
night will begin at 6:00 for all spring
athletes/parents; but at 5:30 I will show
the NFHS 'Concussion Course' for those parents

they along with their parent, will have
to take a free on-line course or attend
this seminar before they can play a sport.

emergency form, physical, concussion waiver
form, and user fee) should be submitted
at this time as well. (see Douments

Athletes
of the Month
Behind
the Athletic Director's Desk
The fall season has come and gone,
and winter season is now upon us. The next few
months will undoubtedly be exciting, so I would
like to take this opportunity to mention some
of the highlights of the fall season and touch
upon some of the happenings coming this winter
season.
The Night Game Weekend was a great experience
for our student-athletes. In the second weekend
of September, SHS hosted a varsity football
game on Friday night, a middle school football
game on Saturday night and a varsity field hockey
game on Sunday night. Based on the amount of
fans at all three venues, I could personally
tell that the entire weekend was a huge success.
I would again like to thank the Stackpole Field
neighbors for their cooperation.
And speaking of middle school football, what
a great success this program turned out to be.
Led by dedicated coaches Vinny Serino and Coco
Guthro, the 40-plus youngsters played competitive
football, learned the game and became part of
the SHS football family. I would like to thank
the school committee, Superintendent Richard
Langlois, the middle school administration and
the high school football staff for their support
with this program, as well.
The fall teams had a lot of success in terms
of wins and losses, and the student-athletes
received many accolades because of this. This
past fall, there were 23 student-athletes from
Saugus High School who were recognized as Northeastern
Conference all-stars.
Now looking forward to the winter season, we
do so with great expectations.
The boys hockey team has their core players
back, and are looking to play two more games
then they played last season; when they lost
in the Division 2 North finals to Tewksbury.
The schedule is tough with games vs. Malden
Catholic and Division 1 North champion Wakefield,
not to mention all the formidable NEC schools
such as Beverly, Winthrop and Danvers.
The girls hockey team is back teaming up with
Winthrop as a co-op, and they hope to win just
one more game then it did last year; when they
too played in the Division 1 North finals, only
to lose to Hingham.
The boys and girls basketball teams should be
much improved. The boys have a relatively young
team, whereas the girls have a team mostly comprised
of upperclassmen. Regardless, both teams have
some very talented players, and the coaches
will have them well prepared and ready for the
NEC challenge.
The track teams, which was on the verge of being
suspended this season, has done a great job
in getting more athletes to come out and play.
As of late last week, there are close to 50
on the rosters, a tribute to the coaches and
the returning athletes, who worked hard in recruiting
more to join the sport.
The swim team is once again a co-op with Lynn
Classical, but our wrestling co-op has been
eliminated, and the team is now solely comprised
of just Saugus youngsters. With a solid youth
program, a middle school waiver and more learning
about the sport, the program should experience
great strides in the upcoming years.
The basketball and hockey cheerleaders are back
at it practicing hard and getting ready to represent
SHS at all home games and also at the NEC cheering
competition. Both teams are committed to their
activity, and in my opinion are absolutely two
of the best in the NEC
The winter months can become very long, but
with the success I believe SHS will have it
should be a very enjoyable one nonetheless.
Come and support our student-athletes, as they
deserve your respect as a result of their hard
work they put in each and every day.
Respectfully,
Michael J. Nelson
