Nicole
DeMatteo, a Saugus High School senior, was awarded
the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents
Certificate of Academic Excellence at the School
Committee Meeting on November 12th.
This award is given to high school students who
have distinguished themselves in the pursuit of
excellence during their high school careers. The
criteria for this award is an outstanding cumulative
average over their three years in high school and
a personal selection by the Superintendent.
Nicole is currently ranked number one in the
Class of 2010. She is a member of the National
Honor Society, Co-President of Chorus and is on
the Varsity Cross Country team.
Nicole's other awards included; Harvard Book
Award recipient, National Merit Scholar (Commended
Student) and John and Abigail Adams Scholarship
recipient.

COMMENDED
STUDENTS IN THE 2010 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
The principal,
Joseph Diorio, of Saugus High School announced
today that Nicole DeMatteo and Eric Kashdan
have been named Commended Students in the 2010
National Merit Scholarship program. A Letter
of Commendation from the school and National
Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which
conducts the program, will be presented by the
principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout
the nation are being recognized for their exceptional
academic promise. Although they will not continue
in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships,
Commended Students placed among the top five percent
of more than 1.5 million students who entered the
2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
"Recognition
of high-achieving students is essential to advancing
educational excellence in our nation," commented
a spokesperson for NMSC. "As demonstrated
by their outstanding performance in our highly
competitive program, the young men and women named
Commended Students represent some of the most
academically talented students in our country.

their educational opportunities and encourage
them in their pursuit of academic success."
