The
Basics of Accelerated Reader
-
Students receive an individual
point goal and reading range determined by
a computerized reading test given in December.
-
Students select books that
they have not previously read and that are
within their reading range. Each book in the
library is labeled with a point value and
reading level. For example, if my goal is
8 points and my reading range is 2.5-4.5,
I need to earn these points by reading books
that have a reading level between 2.5 and
4.5. That way, students are not reading books
that are too easy or too hard for them.
-
Once a student has finished
a book, he/she takes a reading quiz on the
computer and gets a printout on how well he/she
did. The better the student does, the more
points he/she gets for reading the book. Students
get recognized and rewarded for reaching their
point goal.
