SAUGUS HIGH SCHOOL

SUMMER READING LIST

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Mrs. Osgood

2007

All students enrolled in the Advanced Placement course must the following selections over the summer months:

1. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte

2. The House on Mango Street - Sandra Cisneros

3.  A Brave New World- Aldus Huxley

4. A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway

5. Snow Falling on Cedars - David Gutterson

6. The Color Purple - Alice Walker Check it Out!

7. Mrs. Dalloway - Virginia Woolf

8. The Importance of Being Earnest - Oscar Wilde

You should be prepared for class discussion and writing assignments on the summer reading in the first weeks of school. However, it is also critical to capture your immediate responses. Therefore, I ask that you keep a reflective journal to mark your journey through these texts. For each work, you should make at least 5 entries for each work. You should space each entry so that you truly comment on the entire piece of literature. Entries should be substantial in length and include observations on the following:

- Characterization

- Plot

- Tone

- Style and diction

- Theme

- Use of literary devices

- Powerful quotations

- Your questions or problems

- Miscellaneous personal reflections

Your journals will be collected and assessed.

These works cross genres, centuries, and cultures. It is my hope that you take your time and savor each journey. Space your reading throughout the summer and, most importantly, ENJOY!
