Required text: Shattering Glass- Gail Giles
Additional reading: optional from the list below
Students must take handwritten notes on the book. These notes should be taken during their reading, preferably after each chapter has been completed. The notes should include information about the setting, characters, major plot events, and themes. During the first week of school, the novel will be reviewed in class. Students will then be given a test, which will include both objective (multiple choice, matching, etc.) and subjective (open response). Students will be allowed to use their notes during the test.
Students are being asked to read this novel because it provides an interesting parallel with a major work that we will read during the year: Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. Their understanding of Shattering Glass will be further assessed during our work with Lord of the Flies, by identifying connections between the two.
Students are encouraged to read any of the other books from the list below.

English 22 and 23 students are required to keep a handwritten double-entry journal. All journal work will be passed in at the start of the year, so please use three-hole punched, white lined paper. On the left-hand side of the page, write down quotations from the reading. These may be quotations of things that strike you particularly strongly. They may include vivid description, situations of things especially meaningful to you for one reason or another, or anything else that you feel you want to reflect on. Underneath, write your personal response/reaction to the quotations you have selected.
Make sure that the title (underlined) and author appear at the top of each page. Be sure to include page numbers along with the quotes.
*During the first weeks of school the required texts will be the basis of class.
