SAUGUS HIGH SCHOOL

MANDATORY

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

2007

“No matter how busy you think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.”

Confucius

“To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.”

W. Somerset Maugham

Dear Parents and Students:

In this era of high stakes testing, it is imperative that we provide our students with as many opportunities as possible to grow academically. Reading for understanding and appreciation is a skill which translates effectively into every academic area. The purpose of the summer reading program is to provide students with the opportunity to select works which are of literary merit from lists developed by their English teachers at the high school. The teachers have made every effort to choose titles which are both enjoyable and worthwhile. We hope to encourage reading for pleasure as well as reading for enlightenment, and we wan to emphasize the our requirements are minimum standards and should be thought of as a starting point for summer reading rather than the entirety of what a conscientious student should undertake.

English teachers at the high school will be distributing the appropriate reading lists during the last two weeks of school. Copies of the lists have been sent to the Saugus Public Library and Barnes and Noble Bookstore. The lists will also be available in the guidance office of the high school over the summer and on the school's web site. Assessment of the summer reading will take place during the first full week of school.

We wish you and your child a summer of pleasant and profitable reading.

  Sincerely,

The SHS English Department
