Travis Roy

It all happened in 11 seconds.

Welcome to the Travis Roy homepage. This site will inform you about how Travis's accident happened, and how he has been since then. Hope you enjoy the site!

How It Happened:

Travis Roy was a young promising hockey player, but in eleven seconds his whole life turned around. Travis started his first college hockey game ever for Boston University. Nobody knew that it would be his last.

Travis experienced a life changing freak accident that October day in 1995. It all happened in 11 seconds. It was a regular game and Travis went into the corner near the boards, but this time was different. Travis caught his skate on a nick in the ice, lost his footing and went down head first into the boards. Since he went into the boards head first, it cracked his fourth vertebra causing him to be paralyzed.

After the Accident:

Since that October night, Travis has been in and out of hospitals for years. At first they didn't think he would ever be able to move again. After many months, Travis began the slow process of rehabilitation. They eventually got him on a wheelchair that Travis could control by his breathing. There was a straw that determined what the chair would do. But that wasn't enough for him. Travis slowly regained enough strength in his right arm for the doctors to think he could someday work an electic wheelchair. That alone was a miracle. They didn't think he would ever move again; let alone be able to use any part of his body.

After they rehabed Travis to gain enough strength in his right arm to move a joystick, Travis slowly got freedom. He got to leave the hospital for day trips and to visit people. Eventually, they sent Travis out of Boston to a hospital that specialized in spinal cord injuries, which was the perfect place for Travis.
