The Aeronautical society is founded in England in 1866. This is the first group organized to study and experiment with flying.
During this time there were many failed attempts at flying. Reaserch continued and models of planes that resembled kites were assembled. Most of these planes failed to stay airborne for more than a few seconds.
On August 8, 1901, Orville Wright made his first successful flight on his glider in Kitty Hawk.
On December 17, 1903, at 10:35 am, Orville Wright made his first powered flight. He made this in a fully controlable aircraft. The flight lasted only 12 seconds and he flew for a total of 120 feet. Following this, Wilburt, Orville's brother, and Orville made another four flights. Their longest flight flew 852 feet. Following the fourth flight, the plane was rolled over and destroyed by a gust of wind. Their father, Milton Wright, informed the newspapers and the press about their flight.
