History

The first Rugby league started when pubs across England started coming together to play the new game of Rugby, which is a variation of football with more handling. The first great rivalries were between the middle-class, in the north, and the upper-class, in the south. The league started as a non-paying sport. However, the upper-class had an advantage as the middle-class had to work everyday and could not risk injury.

The Split

Around 1892, the North and South split up. The North created the NRFU (North Rugby Football Union) and the South stayed in the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The split was made when the North wanted to compensate their players when they missed work. Being middle class, players could not take time off for games as it was not acceptable for finacial reasons. The South, who were the leaders of the sport, denied and suspended players and teams for the professionalism (Being payed to play the sport).
