2004 Tsunami Facts
- The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was known by the scientific
community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake,
- The earthquake occured at 7:58 on December 24, 2004
- The tsunami had kill 283,100 people making it one of the
deadliest disasters in modern history.
- The magnitude of the earthquake ranged form 9.0 to 9.3 making
it the second largest earthquake recored on a seismograph.
- The earthquake itself lasted about ten minutes compared to
other major earthquakes lasting only a few seconds.
- The shock waves of the earthquake were felt across the planet;
as far away as Oklahoma.
- The entire Earth's surface is estimated to have moved vertically
by up to 1 cm from the eathquake disaster.
- All of the victims were taken completely by surprise; there
were no tsunami warning systems in the Indian Ocean to detect
tsunamis.
- 14,100 people went missing after the disaster.
- Over 1 million people were displaced in the country of Indonesia.
